We face serious choices affecting mathematics 1619. Some were aired during the hasty discussion of the revised A/AS core during 1996, but most were effectively sidelined at that time by the tight deadlines imposed. The subsequent delay in implementing the core gave us time to examine the options more carefully, but it remains unclear how this potentially valuable breathing space has been used. This article explores some of the background issues that urgently need to be addressed if we are not to repeat earlier mistakes.
