Mathematics provision post GCSE for those going on to university needs to prepare students for degrees with a high mathematics content and degrees with less mathematical content. A-level Mathematics does not discriminate between candidates with flair and the very competent and it is not possible to do this in a single examination. There is also too great a variation between boards in the meaning of a particular grade. A-level Mathematics should be replaced by two examinations, one whose style of assessment tests competence and another that tests flair.
