Improving Mathematics Provision for Post-16 Students

G. D. WAKE

Geoff Wake is a Research Fellow working in the Centre for Mathematics Education at the University of Manchester. Prior to this he taught in a number of schools and colleges in England. Much of his work in the Centre has been involved with motivating Mechanics through mathematical modelling. His current areas of research and curriculum development involve both widening access to mathematics for post-16 students and developing the curriculum to support the learning of mathematics to equip youngsters for the workplace. Another area of interest is the use of technology in the teaching and learning of mathematics

This article outlines a development being carried out by the newly formed Qualifications and Assessment Authority that attempts to put in place a new mathematics qualification for post-16 students. The nature of the units developed to date is described and a possible framework in which they will be developed is presented. The assessment of student's work is discussed together with the demand that the units will make of students
